We always knew Starbucks were revolutionaries of the Wi-Fi Hotspot but they’ve gone one step further this time. They’ve launched a new digital network for their Hotspots.

Why are Starbucks going to such lengths to provide Wi-Fi?

CIO, Gillet Stephens has said that more customers log on to Starbuck’s Wi-Fi Hotspots using mobile devices like phones and iPads than laptops.

Starbucks seem to think that more mobile devices mean more people using public Wi-Fi Hotspots. Their figures certainly suggest this. Starbucks US Hotspots get 30 million users a month!

Starbucks are simply changing their Wi-Fi technology to respond to demand.

To improve their coffee houses, US stores now offer their Wi-Fi for free, and Starbucks Wi-Fi Hotspots don’t just offer customers the Internet they interact with them. The Starbucks digital network appears when users connect to a Starbucks Wi-Fi Hotspot and gives users local information as well as news and reviews.

Starbucks value their Wi-Fi customers so much they have built their Wi-Fi system using HTML 5 to accommodate for all the iPad and iPhones logging on.

Thanks to Scobleizer for his interview and article with Gillet Stephens. And to re-ality for the Starbucks shot.

The login page you get with a Public Wi-Fi hotspot is a great way to make your Wi-Fi secure. They help you control who uses your connection and only let legitimate users get online.

The Public Wi-Fi Hotspot box is powerful enough to cover most large pubs / cafes / bars. But what if you have several floors or you want to cover two unconnected areas?

To increase the range of your Public Wi-Fi Hotspot, you might need an extra Wireless Access Point or two. You do not need multiple Public Wi-Fi Hotspot boxes – one is enough.

You can connect as many access points as required – they connect to the rear of the Public Wi-Fi box using ethernet cable. You can install these yourself, we can help you or any friendly IT person could do it.

While none are going to lead to death (probably), it’s a good idea to familiarise yourselves with them, just in case.

The threats include malicious Flash files that can infect your PC (not mac), Geolocation privacy issues and more. It’s quite a good read.

If you’re out and about on your laptop, iPad, mobile phone or even just surfing at home, it’s better you understand the risks, rather than face the total anialiation of your privacy.

Worrying…

Yes it really is but it’s great news for the scoundrels. Ordinary people are advertising that they’re not at home, are going to be away for a bit – and that their houses are empty and no-one’s coming back anytime soon.

pleaserobme.com (now closed) was setup by a couple of Dutch kids. The site took geographical information about millions of users from various sites and displayed it to the world.

Watch out people and please use the Internet carefully…
